It is an honor and privilege to be an AOH member. The organization was founded in Ireland over three hundred years ago during the dreaded "Penal Law" years as a secret organization to help the local Irish when Catholic churches and schools were plundered. Catholics were not allowed to assemble for prayer services. Mass was sometimes offered in a pre-arranged hiding location with lots of trees to cover their presence and a large flat rock which they used as an altar. Those who were caught were punished, whipped, fined and jailed. Priests and Bishops had a price on their heads and were liable to instant execution when found. The AOH was organized in New York City nearly 200 years ago to help the struggling Irish.
